The L397, also known as the Alenquer Tiger pleco, is a visually striking and sought-after freshwater fish species among aquarium enthusiasts. It belongs to the Loricariidae family and is native to the Xingu River basin in Brazil.
An L397's body is predominantly dark black or brown, with vibrant orange markings that resemble tiger stripes. =
In terms of size, L397s are considered medium-sized plecos. They typically reach a length of around 5 to 6 inches (12 to 15 centimeters) when fully grown. This makes them suitable for medium to large aquarium setups.
L397s are bottom-dwelling fish and prefer aquariums with plenty of hiding spots such as caves, driftwood, and rocks. Providing them with these hiding places mimics their natural habitat and helps them feel secure. It is also essential to maintain good water quality, as they are sensitive to poor water conditions. The ideal water parameters for L397 plecos include a temperature range of 76 to 86°F, a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and soft to moderately hard water.
When it comes to feeding, L397s are omnivorous and have a varied diet. In the wild, they primarily feed on algae and small invertebrates. In an aquarium setting, they should be offered a diet that includes high-quality sinking algae pellets or wafers along with servings of fresh vegetables like zucchini or cucumber. Their diet should be supplemented weekly with a more meaty meal, such as sinking carnivore pellets, frozen bloodworms or frozen brine shrimp.
